Learning how to Storyboard

This was my first try with storyboarding a piece of media. It was difficult due to having to draw as well as write a description for every change that happened during the media product. During this task I have learnt that every little detail needs to be written down for a storyboard to be successful, this meaning images as well as descriptions. This including sound, timings of the shot, timings of noise. Whilst planning my opening sequence, I know I will need to write down the timings, description, type of shot, angle and noise on my storyboard. This allowing filming to be more efficient when it comes to handling our time, due to the planning already being efficient enough.

What went well with the storyboard: We displayed the detail of our story board through the drawings, as well as putting what type of shot it was and how long the shot was on the screen for.

Things we could have improved: On our story board we didn't include descriptions of sound which would be good to put on it next time, as well as this we could have given a description of what was going on in the shot as well as the detailed picture.

For this task we were asked to watch a short clip from die hard with a vengeance, while watching the clip we had to draw each frame second by second to create the story board. After we had drawn out the frames, we were asked to annotate the frames with the duration for each of the frames, describe what was happening, explain what camera angle is used in each of the frame and write down any sounds that would be used in the frames.

Sub-Genre Photos and Evaluations

Medium Shot:
This shot was good as we successfully created a medium shot. As well as this the shot displayed Cherry as being isolated and alone due to her looking out onto an empty playground. This could relate to the them of isolation and display a psychological thriller. Although this shot could be perceived as having the theme of isolation, the shot could be improved by controlling the lighting so that she looked out onto a dark gloomy playground or if different darker clothes were worn to try and emphasise the psychological issues.

Close up:
This shot was good as we successfully created a close up shot, as well as this the shot could have implied the theme of a gangster thriller due to the shot being focused on a silver chain. To improve this shot we could have used some red paint/fake blood on the hand/arm to show the theme of horror or we could have worn some 'typical' gangster like clothes such as an Adidas hoodie to imply the theme of gangsters. This would have improved the shot as it would have made the theme of the picture much more obvious.

Sub genre Photos and evaluation:

Extreme close up: this shot clearly displays an extreme close up as you can see the object of the image in a lot of detail and only a small part of the object is visible. However, the problem with this picture is that the thriller genre nor a sub-genre is being displayed. To improve this picture to demonstrate the thriller genre we could have used fake blood on the shoe and on the floor. This would then indicate the image is from a crime thriller or a horror, therefore demonstrating the thriller genre through props.

Low angle shot: this shot clearly shows a low angle from the way the girls look more intimidating even from behind. Again the thriller or sub genre is hard to see, to make this clearer one or 2 of the girls could be holding a gun or knife to demonstrate violence and criminal activity. This would emphasise to the audience that this is a crime thriller or gangster thriller.
